I have recently been assign to the Solaris Systems Administrator position. This is very new and foreign to me. I am already doing things like setting up backups(via ufsdump), going back and mirroring drives that were never mirrored, etc...

I recently learned that there are 6 more servers (we already have 7) on order for other projects. I am begining to realize that I need to get very organized. I am very familiar with Microsoft AD and so coming from that background I am looking for a similar solution. I would like to centralize the following tasks:

1. managment of users, groups and projects
2. managment and reporting of OS patches
3. location of home directories
4. Manage Xsession access (testing NX nomachine now, I really like it so far)
5. management of NFS points
6. manage backups
7. managment of printers

Any suggestions? Like I said I am very new to the Solaris world so please feel free to point out any obvious solutions that you think I might already know about, because I probably don't.

I just read an article on NIS, but from what I gather NIS support has been depreciated. What is its replacement?

Thank you,

U can use the SMC tool, though it takes a while to lauch (39 secs) in case, it gives u a graphical interface to be able to do quite a few things u have requested above.

If you are logging in via the CDE or the Java desktop u can find it like a windoze env. From the CLI u can open it using smc&.

1. You can use a new LDAP or NIS. You can also use Kerberos and LDAP to authenticate against AD. Solaris 10 has been a lot easier with this.

2. If you have access to the Internet there is a program called patch manager. You can also download a program called patchdiag...(not sure if it is with Sol 10).

3. Look into setting up a NFS Server and automount...can be done with NIS or LDAP.

4. Not exactly sure what you want here...

5. Again look into setting up NIS for automounting.

6. ufsdump, tar, Veritas, etc...

7. You can use smc, admintool, or manually.

Like someone mentioned you can use SMC for a lot of this stuff...since you also said you were familiar with AD. You could look into MS Services for UNIX. This is a free program from MS. It updates the AD Schema and allows you to manage accounts, nfs, automount maps, etc...
