Pardon my ignorance, I am new to the Solaris world. (AIX Admin)....

Is it possible to control the order or the amount of drives that spin-up at time of boot? On the flip side, is it possible to have drives spin-down when not in use after a specified amount of time? ie:1hr.....

Some background information:

I am in the planning stages of putting together a NAS using Solaris 10 & ZFS. The NAS box will not be continually accessed so I would like to take advantage of some power saving features......

Is any of this possible? Links to documentation?

Thanks!

Hi Frankie, not sure about Solaris 10, but mounts are usually controlled and ordered by filesystem entries in /etc/vfstab in Solaris 8. Of course filesystems are usually only a partition of a disk, so spinning the whole disk down might take other things with it if you're not careful! Whether that's the case with ZFS filesystems I don't know, but I'm sure someone will!

I want to be good, is that not enough?

You might look at powerd and powerd.conf. Since I do mostly servers, we usually disable this stuff (early versions made servers unexpectedly stop).
