I have just setup a new file system with disksuite and when I run the newfs it comes back with the following:-

newfs /dev/md/rdsk/d18
/dev/md/rdsk/d18: Unable to find Media type. Proceeding with system determined parameters.
newfs: construct a new file system /dev/md/rdsk/d18: (y/n)? y

Do I need to worry about this message

I believe this started in the opensolaris version and made its way into the Solaris10 update 6 (05/08)

I have not heard anything as far as a fix, nor any issues cause directly by it, but who knows.

for now, I personally am not worried about it, unless it gives me reason.

You will also see this with the growfs commands, which uses newfs.

I think there is a bug id out on it, but I do not know the status.

It wants (I think) to optimize the filesystem given the physical geometry and disk characteristics. I would only be concerned if it is a disk it should know about, which means it did not detect the disk correctly at boot time.
