I got a PC running Win95 previously and I upgraded it to Win98SE when I bought another new HDD. Now I got 2 HDD install in my PC with master and slave configuration.

I would like to transfer the softwares stored in the Win95 HDD to Win98SE HDD. Can anyone suggest how I can do this apart from reintalling the softwares. My main concern, especially, is to retrieve back the settings in IE, like emails, address books and my favorites etc. as I dont know how to import back these settings.

Thanks for all of your help.

You can't transfer the software applications, since the installation process writes to the registry. You'll have to have the original CD's. You can, however, copy favorites, address book, email. For favorites, just search for the Favorites folder and copy the contents to the same folder on the new HDD. For address book, search for *.wab files and do the same. For email, I assume you're using Outlook Express. Not sure about win95, but by default, win98 stores your OE email files here: C:\windows\Identities\{itentity number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Look for a bunch of .dbx files anc copy them to the folder on the new drive, or you may be able to open OE on the new drive and use the Files-Import function to import the files from the old drive.

As bygeek stated, you can't simply transfer applications from one Windows installation to another without reinstalling the application or manually editing/creating registry keys in the right locations (not pratical obviously).

You can manually pull over data from each application though, if you know where to look.

Of course, there is another option though heavily NOT recommended. You could format your Win98SE drive. Then by using the startup floppy that should have come with your new HDD, make an exact replica of your Win95 drive onto the new one. After doing so, simply upgrade the Win95 installation to Win98SE which will carry over everything. Typically it's not a good idea because any problems you had under 95 could carry over as well. "Clean installs" are generally more efficient than" upgrades". But if it's worth the settings and time you save from having to reinstall all your favorite apps, it might be the right decision for you.
