Software Registration Algorithm?

I'm looking for any links or resources to software registration source code, to help protect software I develop. Do most commercial software producers use basically the same code routines? You know, enter this x-digit code to activate your software...

It may be no one shares this type of code, but if someone knows where I can find some help/examples - It would be highly appreciated.

It's in VB, but it seems easy enough to read to get the general idea of what is going on to roll your own version in C++
