wondering whether to save money and buy an Xserve and running software RAID on it, or whether to get an XRaid box too.
Anyone any opinion on hardware/software RAID?

XServe's softRAID is good, but hardware RAID will always be quicker as there is a dedicated processor doing it for you.

The XRAID is kinda cute and very well priced, but do you need the capacity?

I presume the softRAID is less resilient than the h/w RAID. Yes the XRAID is cute but excessive for us.
