Is there a quick way to use the default software of Windows 2000 server to create a good software mirror if I promise to buy 2 drives the same please? I have IDE, not SCSI. Using standard IDE, not hardware raid.

You can do this using disk administrator but it is not robust a hardware raid. I would still recommend a raid controller (IDE RAID controllers are not that expensive). Hope this helps.

Most of us would recommend HW Raid, but if that is not an option, running the OS on MS SW RAID 1 is fine. I've seen it, worked with it, everything runs fine. Most OS's and applications don't make a dent in the availble resources on a modern server.

But.... If you can, get a HW Raid controller.

Majority carries the vote. I will advise you use hardware raid.Asus mobs have good buit in raid controllers and you will never regret.I have learnt a big lesson for using software raid.
