Hello,

I am installing Websphere in my AIX system. But the preinstallation requisite says it needs, 87 MB in /usr file system. but i have only 11 MB there. I have other big file systems available in which i want to install instead of installing in /usr. Is there any way to do that ?

please let me know

Thanks

Hi rdoss

Don't you have enough free partitions in the rootvg ?, if you do not have free partitions in rootvg , then try removing other unwanted filesystems and free up some free partitions in the rootvg and allocate these free partions to the /usr filesystem. One option is to remove unnecessary softwares installed in your system , this should freeup the /usr filesystem considerably . These are my suggestions , also i feel that the system requires some libraries and other files to be installed under /usr , so there is no straightforward way of getting around this problem , also if this is a new system and u feel that the disk space has not been allocated correctly , it is better u reinstall or reallocate enough space to the /usr filesystem at the earliest,

rdoss,

To expound on Teddy74's suggestion. Many of the programs install documentation in various languages and formats. I found that removing languages I wasn't concerned with and formats I didn't use relieved alot of space problems.

The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.

Hi rajesh,

Thanks for your response.

I have added another physical volume(17 GB) to 'rootvg' and allocated 125 physical partitions of 32 MB each (Total - 125 * 32 = 4 GB) to /dev/hd2 which is mounted on /usr.

But still if i give df -k the output is :

# df -k
Filesystem 1024-blocks Free %Used Iused %Iused Mounted on
/dev/hd4 32768 25352 23% 1034 7% /
/dev/hd2 229376 11720 95% 10033 18% /usr
/dev/hd9var 32768 30172 8% 499 7% /var
/dev/hd3 32768 31660 4% 29 1% /tmp
/dev/hd1 32768 3068 91% 44 1% /home
/dev/apps 16777216 16250572 4% 17 1% /apps
/dev/oracle 16777216 16247884 4% 133 1% /oracle
/dev/cd0 277418 0 100% 138709 100% /infocd

but if i give:

# lslv -l hd2

hd2:/usr
PV COPIES IN BAND DISTRIBUTION
hdisk0 007:000:000 100% 000:000:007:000:000
hdisk1 125:000:000 86% 000:017:108:000:000

This shows that the LV hd2 has got 7 physical partitions from hdisk0 and 125 pp's from hdisk1.

Eventhough it is showing that it has added 125 + 7 = 132 partitions to hd2, it is not taking those 125 partitions in account. Do we have to enable or activate these additions ?

please let me know .

thanks

Hi rdoss!

You have to increase the filesystem size using the chfs command or u can use smitty to increase the filesystem size , actually here u have allocated space to the logical volume hd2 but that space has to be allocated to the filesystem /usr by using the chfs command. eg:
chfs -a Size=+<newsize> /usr

the <newsize> is in 512 byte blocks , so calculate it appropriately and add it , it is better u do this via smitty ie..
smitty chfs
hope this helps

To verify that the physical partitions (PP's) are there to use to increase the size of your rootvg, you will need to type the following:

lsvg rootvg

The display will be something similar to what I show below:

VOLUME GROUP: rootvg VG IDENTIFIER: 007251e258064335
VG STATE: active PP SIZE: 8 megabyte(s)
VG PERMISSION: read/write TOTAL PPs: 537 (4296 megabytes)
MAX LVs: 256 FREE PPs: 24 (192 megabytes)
LVs: 16 USED PPs: 513 (4104 megabytes)
OPEN LVs: 13 QUORUM: 2
TOTAL PVs: 1 VG DESCRIPTORS: 2
STALE PVs: 0 STALE PPs 0
ACTIVE PVs: 1 AUTO ON: yes

The FREE PPs field is what you need to pay attention to.

Hope this helps!

Chuck
