Is there a way to work around playing programs that require the cd to be in the cd-rom? I own a laptop and hate to pack all of those cd everytime I take a trip.

If you create an image file (ISO, BIN etc) of the CD you can then use a tool like Daemon Tools to make windows think that image is a physical CD.

It will not work for things like games however which have protection built in.

There are noCD patches for most games out there ... usually they replace the main exe file with one that does not check for the CD.

I'm not sure if it is acceptable to post links to the web sites that host these files here. While these noCD patches certainly have a legitmate use (as per your request), their primary use is to enable illegal copies of games.
