I have an image that I have cut and pasted on a different background. I need to make it look like it wasn't cut and pasted. I think that I need to soften the edges of the pasted image.
Select the major part of the image in the centre with whatever shape you want the final picture to be and then feather the selection with a large feather value. Finally, invert the selection and cut. The edge should get a soft fade into transparent and you can use the image more seamlessly over other images.
I would do the same thing as Trojan suggested but instead of cutting (as long as it's on its own layer) go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection. This will hide the part you want to erase instead of deleting it, so if you need to go back and make changes it's still there. (Also, note that you have to enter the Feather value before you make your selection.)
Select the layer that was created by ctrl clicking the layer thumbnail. Then go to Select, (I think its edit),an then contract. Contract your selection by a few pixels and then go to select, inverse. I would make a copy of the layer by hitting ctrl-j, and then blend this layer with a gaussian blur or levels, etc.
