I have an old beater of a computer that I was able to replace the proccesor on. Originaly it was a Cyrix 6x86 100mhz 120+ with a 100mhz bus speed and a 3.3v core with an Amd-k5 PR166 processor for it. IT has a 66mhz bus speed with a 3.52v core. The mobo manual specificaly has the jumper settings for my AMD (the jumper is a 4 notch on-off switch). Now since I replaced the Cyrix with the AMD the fastest I can get the mobo to reconize is 100mhz. It seems that every time I switch the processor Jumper 1 (there are 4 jumpers on the switch) doesn't seem to turn on. I have no idea what in the_______ is going on. Help would be greatly apppreciated. If you need any clarifications post and then I can reply. Thanks Again. Scotty Mac a.k.a smaxted

I have the same CPU in my 'parts' box. Can you post the make or model of the motherboard?

All I know about the mobo is it is a GA-586VX...hope it helps. Oh yah I tried an intel 200mhz-mmx processor and the same thing happened. It would only run as 166mhz at a jumper set to 200mhz. Scotty Mac a.k.a smaxted

Could someone help me figure out the reason why the processors are under-clocked and not running at the right speed? Scotty Mac a.k.a smaxted

It is a GigaByte board, this is a link for the manual:
It needs Adobe Acrobat Reader, right-click the name and save it to your hard drive.

A link to the Processor chart:

Some more links here:

This link has some comments on the board:

set the mobo speed to 60mhz and the multiplier
to 1.5x. The k5 PR120 actuall cpu speed is 90mhz

According to the manual, the switch settings for the AMD K5-P166 are:
SW1 - ON
SW2 - ON
SW3 - OFF
SW4 - OFF

But I am curious as to why the manual specifies the K5-P166 but the CPU is marked K5-PR166.

Sorry, I read your posting wrong.
AMD k5 Pr166 66mhz 1.75x

Sorry, I read your posting wrong.
AMD k5 Pr166 66mhz 1.75x

What is the max multiplier and bus speed that your mobo
can handle?

Note* The K5 PR166 runs at 116.7 mhz Socket 5,7
The K6 Pr166 runs at 166 mhz Socket 7

The PR rating doesn't always represent the true
cpu speed until you get up into the K6.
