I have an S-Bus ISDN extension unit on the PBX - all working Ok. ISDn is patched out on CAT5 cabling...

I have a 50 pair tie line to another cab and would like to run S-bus ISDN to that area. As 2 pairs are required, will there be a problem with using 2 adjacent pairs on the 50 pair to carry the ISDN?

Is this accepted (acceptable) practice?
what is the maximum length of cable that this can be used over (or is this PBX dependant)?

Or do I need to run CAT-5/6 cable between the 2 cabs for ISDN usage?

Hi Matt,

Yes, it will require 2 pairs. Plus if the set is remotely powered you may need a pair for power.

Adjacent pairs are fine. Cat 3 or better is fine.

Max distance depends on the number of devices (S0 is a bus) but if you have only a single device it is quite high (> 300) feet.

If you are out in that range let me know and I can cck the max distance for the simple single device case (I am moving offices or I'd look it up for you now)

Thanks very much.

Situation has changed slightly...

I now have to add some isdn 2 trunks to PBX... the (BT) NTEs about 300 feet from the PBX (same cabling - 50 pair) will this also work? (short term fix)

It all works!

Thanks for the help

This is a short term fix to provide a few extra lines for a PABX. I've had to do some crafty stuff with patch leads and krone blocks!
