Hi network gurus,

I have must get into SNMP-Networkmanagement quickly, so
I have installed and set up NAGIOS (successor of Netsaint) on my linux-box and can view the Nagios-configured Nodes
on the network.
To avoid misinterpretations of terms and functions, I'd
like to ask the experienced among you for some help
with 2 of my problems.

1.) MIBs:
Is this just a structure-tree to show how data is organized, or does a MIB already contain the data itself?
Are the data requested by snmp-commands already in the device itself? Do I have to make some setups with the MIBs? Whats in a MIB when I download it , and most important, when placing the MIB into the proper directory, how is it automatically loaded?

2.) snmpd agent: I have the usc-snmpd package on my linux box. I could make a snmpwalk and snmpget for quite a few things and got the results, although I havent done any setups so far. Is there anything more to setup with the
snmpd daemon beside configuring the read-only - and the read/write community and the trap receiving NMS?

Any help is apreciated. (Excuse my bad English)

Regards,

Fred
