We have a Dlink DSL-504 router. I'm trying to get some utility software working that is asking for the SNMP community name (together with the IP address of the router) so that it can communicate with the router. Does anyone know where I might find this. The two options it offers is 'public' and 'private', neither of which work. I'm pretty sure its the community name thats wrong as the IP address is correct.

hi there,

it looks like the community name is the culprit.Reason is , the SNMP community string can be set other than public/private by the programmer who implemented the SNMP agent on that router, so you need ti ask them for the community strig/name what they set to.This is where the basic snmp security comes into picture!!!

hope this helps you....

Ah, I installed the router, and didn't set any SNMP settings. We also have a Dlink print server, and the software will talk to that with a community name of 'public'. Maybe its a factory set string with the router???. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to answer kumar, I appreciate it.
