Hello All,
I'm attempting to sniff traffic from a Mitel 5220 IP phone -- nothing fancy, I just want to get packet captures of a call from my desk to my cell phone so that I can learn about the protocols involved. I was under the impression that I could simply plug my laptop into the PC ethernet port over the phone and sniff the traffic (I'd be using tcpdump on a RedHat laptop), but this doesn't appear to be the case, as I get no traffic when attempting this. I've also tried plugging the PC ethernet port into a hub where the laptop was also plugged in, but I noticed that the hub's activity light isn't even blinking when I make a call, which indicates to me that there is no voice traffic being carried over this line.
Since we're using a power-over-LAN setup here at work, I assume that I'd have to get a PoL-enabled cable/hub if I wanted to route the main ethernet jack on the phone through something that my laptop could sniff on. Seeing as how that equipment isn't necessarily cheap, is there a simpler way to do all of this, preferably a free one?
Thanks,
Alex Kirk
