Hello Everybody,

For our several classrooms we have new machines. Now I have to make new images, and asked myself if it is possible to run the different Sniffer apps (Pro, DSS Agent and Console) on a VMware based machine. Our new machines are P4 2.4Ghz with 1Gb RAM and standard XP installed. So, i would like to install VMWare on these machines and make a W2K instance for the Pro and the Console and a NT4 instance for the Agent. (These will ofcourse all be running on differnet physical machines).
Anyone know if this is possible?
Thanks
Robert

Hi Robert,
Just for reference Sniffer Pro is only supported on 98, NT4 wkst with SP6 and 2000 with SP2 OS's.
The sniffer console is only supported on 98, NT4 wkst with SP6 and 2000 with SP2 OS's.
The agent is only supported on NT4 wkst with SP6.
At the current moment in time!!
You should be able to get Pro and console working on other OS's, but might have problems with captures and the expert screen.

Hi Alf,
Thanks for your respons, but is doens't answer my question. I know perfectly well wich OS's are supported, but VMWare is a software package that allows you to run another OS within for example W2K, completely independent. The question was if that is possible for exameple with an XP system running a Win2K OS in a VMware session. Normally the software installed on the Win2K OS will not notice anything from the underlaying XP (it is running independently).
But, what will happen when i install Sniffer on the virtual W2K machine? When i use the NAI drivers for example, i will change things in my NDIS stack. Whill this affect the virtual Win2K machine or even cause the underlaying XP to crash?

I am busy teaching next couple of weeks, but when i have some spare time, i will try to set up an test myself to find out. Just hoped sombody here had the answer, that would save me som time.
Regards
Robert

Hi Helge,

Long time no see (and hear), last time was in Munchen if i am correct. Good to hear from you.

Thanks for your answer. The idea was to run on VMware in the classrooms. That would make it easier for our administrators.

Now i know it is working i am gonna try it out.
Regards,
Robert
