Hey everybody, I work in a mid-range AS400 environment recently given this project to replace our a 3com router to a cisco router. I have a network controller designed to link RF data terminals to host-based applications(AS400) The network controller is attached to the 3com router through a serial port and currently using DSLW. My question is on the new cisco router do I still need DLSW or is there alternative? The AS400 is at a central location and the network controller at remote location. Im fairly new to SNA. Could the RF data terminals piggyback on TCP/IP rather then SNA?

DLSW is TCP.. it's tunneling the SNA traffic across a TCP connection via IP packets. It works pretty well.. I think it's "better" then STUN but they both work. The SNA is touchy about delays on the net and you may find the connection drops at times for no reason. Sometimes a simple interface reset will cure it.. it resets the TCP pipe connection. Make sure both routers have the same IOS level to prevent subtle problems between the 2 DSLW engines.

If you could get the powers to be to cough for something like Microsoft SNA server, you can have the SNA local and then use normal IP to connect over at the remote site.
