SMTP Relay

I have an internal web app that polls an Exchange account via POP3 for new mail messages every 2 minutes and will also send emails internally using SMTP. This works fine for internal addresses, BUT does not work for any external address. I see that I am getting a "relay denied" error BUT cannot figure out how to resolve. When sending SMTP, I am authenticating and everything I read states if I authenticate I should be able to relay.

Any ideas?

Not to sound like a smartalec but are you sure its not trying to use a forwarding type rule to forward the mail to external addresses. I know by default forward rules are allowed only to internal address unless you modify your remote domain.

Could you also give a little more depth on your authentication method that you are using? Could this be something that you need to check the "Externally Secured" box in your receive connector?

If it's your web app that's sending smtp mail, then you will probably need to add it's ip address to your Exchange server for an allowed relay.

This can be done several ways, either through a send connector or through the Global Settings\Transport Settings in you Hub Tranport Server under Organization Configuration.

Found out that the web app, using Perl and Authen:SASL to authenticate, is failing. States, No SASL Mechanism Found. (Which is so not true since I know it is installed)

It then tries to send/authenticate via POP3 which it does then it fails due to relay denied. How can I permit this POP3 account to relay?

Thanks theravager! Followed your link and it worked using POP3 auth.
