SMTP Port

While installing Symantec Antivirus for SMTP Gateways on a Windows 2000 server, the installation wizard prompted me to specify a SMTP Port. The default was 25. Currently that port is being used by something else, so I selected 26. Does it matter what port I select or should I be using a certain port? I assume I should select the current port that is transmitting emails. If so how can I tell which ports are being used by which applications?
