SMTP MTA error

A couple of times in recent weeks we have encountered the following error on our SMTP gateway (Lotus Notes 4.6.6b Server).

SMTPMTA: osesctl MtaCreateChildTask() failed, rcode=13076(decimal)

The message is repeated a huge number of times and the server is unable to carry out any useful work.

Any assistance would be gratefully received.
