SMTP Mail will not go externally

We have a extranet which has a contacts system on. We are trying to send mail using the SMTP service on the server with the extranet which then passes it to the mail server for forwarding. This works OK for internal addresses but as soon as you tyry to send to an external address the mail bounces back saying that it can't find the e-mail address in the address book. This suggest that it is only looking internally for that address.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue.
