SMTP Error Sending Email

In Outlook or Netscape I get the following error when I try to send email:

An error occured while sending mail: SMTP server error.
The server responded:
(null)

Anybody have a clue as to what this means? This machine in on a Novell network and everything else seems to be normal.

Check you are trying to connect to the correct email server.

To test the IP address you have, bring up a command line and type in
telnet <ipaddress> 25
this will try to make a SMTP connection to the server.

If you get a response, then all well and good, otherwise, you need to find the correct IP address.
