SMTP Connector bouncing up and down

Exchange 2000, active/passive clustered, SP2, Win2k adv servers, SP3. I have an smtp connector set within my admin group which keeps going up and down. It is set to forward to a smart host, which is a Trend IMSS server (v 5.15). This server is constantly available. Once the connector shows a down state, all mails queue in the undeliverable queue. It always comes back up on it's own, but if you stop and start the smtp Virtual server, this also brings it back up. No errors are showning in the event logs. Any ideas?
