Hi,

I'm getting the following bounceback message in my mailserver logs when sending mail to a couple of domains - the majority of mail is being sent without a problem.

11/03/2004 10:39:25 Iscan-maild[2268]: 504 <dev>: Helo command rejected: need fully-qualified hostname xxxxx@dsl.pipex.com

I thought this may be an issue with my mailserver name not being set up in dns correctly but forward and reverse dns are working fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated, cheers.

It seems to suggest that your mail server is sending "helo servername" and not "helo servername.domain.com". For the most part sending anything after "helo" usually works, eg

[chris@uranium chris]$ telnet mail.tecumsehgroup.com 25
Trying 216.45.19.20...
Connected to mail.tecumsehgroup.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mail.tecumsehgroup.com InterChange ESMTP v3.62 Ready
helo dude
250 Ok, hello dude.

But in some cases mail servers may be configured to only accept "helo" with a fully qualified domain name.

Just a guess!

Chris.
