Our ISP allows for SMTP Auth when sending but it seems that unless I first authenticate to their server using POP3 I'm unable to send smtp. Would anyone have any input on this matter?
That's pretty much the nature of the beast. It is also called pop-before-smtp. Back in the olden days an e-mail account had to be specifically setup to relay other wise spammers would just spoof the return address. This is called an open relay which would get you black listed and no other servers would allow mail from yours. Almost all smtp servers use the same user/password combo as the pop3 server. When setting up your e-mail client, you should see a check box that says this server requires authentication. Then you enter your pop user and password or check another box that says "This server uses the same information as the pop3 server". Then everything is handled automatically.
