SMTP address format

Inside CE 8.5, I'm trying to send reports via email to an address external to our company. We send internal and external all the time, but addresses to this particular location are of the format 'firstname.lastname@companyname.com'. The reports appear to run successfully, but the mail isn't delivered and no error messages are picked up in smtp. Do I have the address format wrong? all of the other addresses I eve rneed to send to do not have a '.' in them. Is this is what is causing the failure and if so whats the correct format?

Hi,
In the CMC, go to the job server ( report server) and go to destinations..
In the SMTP tab be sure that your mailserver's name is in the first line ( ours is mail) and the
companyname.com is in the domain section..

Then the format of the to: and From: are as you specified, the first.laast@companyname.com should not cause any problems, that's what our address look like as well..
