I need to change the passwords on these accounts to conform to my company's IT standards.. In the earlier verisons of sms the passowrds were set by the system, so one could not change them manually. I am running sms sp3... which i thought had resolved this issue.

So can I just go ahead and change them. I have one parent server and two chils servers.

many thanks for any input on this.

Richard

are you using SMS 2.0 or 2003. Did you try using Feature pack MSAC (manage site account tool)

Thanks for you quick response. I am using sms 2.0 sp3, but am downloading sms 2.0 sp5. have not heard of the msac tool, so will have at look at that. any more guidance you can offer.. much appreciated.

I would suggest to you upgrade to SMS 2003 sp2. I don't know your setup, but it is much better. How good is the link between the Parent and Child servers. Do you have users that move around?

wow.. is there a cost in that? the child servers are on a 2meg link and a 256k link. We have a over a 150 laptop users.. and alot of branches on 64k lines.. I would love toupgrade, but if there is a cost or a big resource factor in doing so, my company will reject it. so may have to stay with sms2.0 sp5.

When you say cost I would say your company needs to look at the bigger picture. How do your users in the branches get their updates?

we really only use it for remote control in the branches... and use scripting! to send out microsoft patches. crazy i know. but thats the way it is here... sms is not well liked.. so i just try to ensure it works on remote control and thats about... changing the password on these accounts is important as it is an audit exposure we have.

Thank you for all your help, athough i have read the server guide and it still does not make it 100% clear if i can change it. I will have to dig deeper.. but you have given me a head start..
