SMS_SITE_BACKUP service failure after applying SP5

On installing SP5 the SMS_SITE_BACKUP service has been failing.
The event viewer logs show ;

The SMS_SITE_BACKUP service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the SMS_SITE_BACKUP service to connect.

Application popup: smsbkup.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.

Nothing helpfull in the smsbk.log file

We have this problem on two of our servers, both upgraded to SP5. We are monitoring the SMS services and the date of the backup log file, every day. Also when the backup fails it may sometimes leave the SMS services stopped, this is why we need to monitor them. At present the only fix we have is to reboot the server when these systems occur.

Is your processor getting pegged when this happens?

Yes it is, I have tried allocating more memory to SMS, by restricting the percentage of memory SQL can use.

sounds like tlist is messing up on you check and see if thats hogging up your resources and try this:

This is another thing that will do it if you at one point upgraded that server from NT4 to W2k

Tim, one of the servers is an NT4 machine and one is a win2000. They show all the systems you have noted. I will try this fix, it looks very promising, thanks. I will post the out come.
