My SMS server hangs and requires a hard reboot several times a day. Event viewer shows several messages similar to the following:

SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER on computer xxxxx reported: SMS site Component Manager could not access the site system "\\computername" due to an unexpected failure within the network abstration layer (NAL). the operating system reported error 2147500037: Unspecified error

I am new to sms server, any help would be greatly appricated.

Hey,

If your SMS server is hanging. It's probably more important to look at the Winnt Event Viewer. Look in the System log for any errors.

I am working in a SMS 2.0 SP3 environment. We are using Compaq ML570's (new) servers. We are also using Network Teaming to provide a larger bandwidth and network fault tolerance.

We have noticed, however, that when we use network teaming, our SMS servers hang. We have been working with Microsoft to correct the problem. We know that the problem specifically caused when NIC teaming (either fault tolerance, load balancing, or Cisco Fast Ether channel) is used. The hang is caused by an RPC hang.

Are you using any type of network NIC teaming? What type of server are you using?

When we turn off Network teaming, our SMS site servers will not hang.

I was finally able to overcome this problem by escalating my problem to Microsoft. Microsoft has confirmed that there was a bug. They were able to provide me with a hotfix. This hotfix seems to have resolved my problem. Joseph L. Poandl

Yes, be sure to check the server and SMS logs (I believe that the site component mgr log is smssite.lo*).

Check your status messages too. You probably have message 1036: "SMS Site Component Manager could not access site system %1 due to an unexpected failure within the network abstraction layer (NAL). Solution: To examine the exact failure, turn on logging for SMS Site Component Manager using the SMS Service Manager, wait for SMS Site Component Manager to retry this operation, and review the log messages for SMS Site Component Manager. Please refer to your SMS documentation or the Microsoft Knowledge Base for further troubleshooting information."
