I am looking for a way to find out what software is running on each of the machines on the network and what (if any) the product ID's are to go with that software. If anyone can point me in the right direction (i.e. editing the MOF file, etc), it would be greatly appreciated. I'm actually VERY new to the whole SMS thing. Thanks.

Jeff

Here is a quick overview. I'm not sure if your meaning of ProductID above is the same as what I've mentioned below.

SMS 2.0 software inventory collects information on files with extensions defined for the software inventory client (exe, mdf, vbs, etc.)

The information collected results in three non-normalized views: SoftwareFile, SoftwareProduct and UnknownSoftware, the latter being a subset of SoftwareProduct (where ProductID is not available).

SoftwareFile provides information about the files and the clients with the files, and includes a ProductID so you can link it to SoftwareProduct. Not all files are associated to a product (as a result of that information not being embedded in the header) and the result is a ProductID of 0.

SoftwareProduct provides information about the manufacturer of the files. A manufacturer may produce many products, and each product may have many files.

Many thousands of clients having many files inventoried results in millions of records in these views. In this case you may wish to work with the SoftwareFile, SoftwareInventory, and SoftwareProduct tables, which are normalized. This can only be accomplished outside the SMS admin console (through Query Analyzer, Access...) and should be approached with caution.
