SMS NOT on same servers as SQL

I know its recommended practice to have SMS on the same server as the database (SQL). but can one have it on a different server? if not what might be the implications of not having it on the same server? any help would be appreciated.

No you can go either way with sms sql server, but if you ever move it off, you can never put it back (If you wanted to)

It is somewhat common to see large sites with a stand alone sql box.

I have a Site with around 1,000 clients and I have two separate servers, one for SMS and one for the SQL database and I've never had any issues
