SMS MP error message 5436

I have had my SMS server up and running for about 3 years now with no real problems. All of a sudden, I am getting error messages in the site system status and component status areas. All the messages are the same--ID 5436 component SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER and the description is that the MP is not responding to HTTP requests: the http error is Unauthorized.

We have been applying mandated security checks and I believe something we did on either in the IIS site settings or the SQL settings broke SMS. I have checked everywhere I can think of and cannot find anything that will point my in the right direction. I have gone through all of the possible causes listed and none of them fixed the problem. Has anyone else ever run in to this before? Please help!
