I am in the planning stage right now. My plan is to install SQL database for SMS on my file server and have SMS Administrative Server on a separate server. Is it a good idea?

Along with the SMS Admin server, I also want to have WSUS server on the same machine(on 1 server, I will have SMS Admin server and WSUS server, and terminal server).Since WSUS server requires SQL, is it a good idea to have a WSUS database on the same machine SMS database is hosted on?

SMS minimum requirements call for
Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition with SP3 or later or
SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition with SP3a or later.

WSUS calls for WMSDE (desktop edition of SQL). Can WSUS and SMS run on the same version of SQL?

First of all, its always good practice to have the SMS SQL DB on another server other than the one where SMS will be installed. And yes you can have WSUS on the same server as SMS and WSUS use completely separate databases. For the record, i'm running SMS 2003 w/SP2 and my SQL server is SQL 2000 hosting the SMS DB, a corporate DB, and the WSUS DB with no issues. I just religiously backup the DB server

Thank you for the answer, drew1701d.

What SQL Licensing are you using on your SQL 2000: per device/user or per processor?

We are planning to have up to 600 PCs with SMS client installed.

Thank you again.

We are using per device licensing.

What if you put MOM into the mix as well, I have had issues with all apps trying to use IIS?
