I've got a SMS 2.0 installation with about 1500 devices.
My Primary site shows a lot of duplicate devices. If I delete the machine from the collection it appears after a while and duplicates itself again somtimes up to five times.

Here's something that caused duplicate ID's at our site. As we received new computers to be deployed, our Help Desk was plugging a hard disk into the new PC's to load standard software. They were then logging into the network to copy down some additional software. Because they logged into the network, the SMS client software installed on this plug in hard disk, including the unique SMS ID. They then would plug this hard disk into the next new PC and copy the hard disk image to the new PC. As a result, quite a few new computers ended up with duplicate SMS ID's.

The only fix that we found was to go deinstall the SMS client from these machines, then let it reinstall at the next login (and as a result get a new unique ID).
Just thought that I would let you guys know that on the Resource Kit there is a utility that is called newUID.exe

This assigns a new Unique Id to client machines. Hope that this helps you out.
