I'm not sure how SMS Server-Client connections work, but I would like to know what would happen should the server go offline. Would all the clients start displaying error messages/crash the system ? Or would they patiently wait for the server to come online again, and then reconnect ?

We had previous software that was also Server-Client based, and the client caused problems if the server was rebooted or went offline.

Anyone know ?

Could you please be more specific:

Which server goes offline (Primary SMS-SiteServer, Secondary SMS-SiteServer, Server functioning as a CAP, DP,...) ?

Chris

In the normal course of action, if an SMS server goes offline or the client cannot contact the server for whatever reason, the SMS client does not cause any alerts or problems. It just goes on its merry way, checking back for a network connection and for its server every hour or so. Software and hardware inventories continue to take place if scheduled to occur during the server / network downtime. If after 60 days the client still hasn't contacted a server then the client uninstalls itself.

If the client was in the midst of a client update and the server goes offline or network connection is lost then the SMS client could cause problems, or it may just lie quietly and not work until the server / network is restored.

snyderj,

Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I was after. It's also handy to know that should the server "disappear", the client will uninstall itself after 60 days (good for instance for laptops moving to another office)
