I am trying to do a full client inventory (*.exe) of all Windows 2000 and XP machines which have been found by SMS within our domain.
However looking in the Status Message Viewer, it is full of warnings stating ID 10651 "The agent has not collected files matching the file name "*.exe" or the path "*\*" from this computer because the files exceed the maximum size limit of 20480 KB. You may need to reconfigure the maximum size limit to allow file collection at the next scheduled agent interval"!
I have changed the files to collect the maximum available which is 20480KB but I still get these messages although it appears to show an inventory of software on these computers under the resource explorer!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Wellsy

Are you wanting to collect those files or do an inventory? Sounds like you want to do an inventory, so first thing to do is remove the collection agent (Client Agents => Software Inventory Client Agent => File Collection tab). Delete the *.exe collection agent from the File Collection tab.

Now make sure your inventory is set up (Inventory Collection tab). Create an inventory to view all *.exe files. Go to the General tab and set your interval to 1 hour. After a few hours you should see your inventory information through the SMS default reports.

A collection like that would have wreaked havoc on my network and my server.

Yes, I've been trying to do both an inventory and collection and have been upping the size of the collection daily but to no avail but this is not too much of a problem at the moment. I'm new to SMS and need to run a report that identifies all software held on the clients. Although the inventory appears to have returned the data when looking at the clients individually within Resource Explorer, I still cannot run any report. They all come back as blank. I don't even get the menus within Report Viewer down the left hand side and if I try to run a query, it doesn't come back with the expected results.

Many thanks for your reply Mich

Why are you doing both. By collecting all *.exe's, you are actually getting a copy of every .exe on every sms client in your infrastructure. Depending on how big you infrastructure is, that will cause a lot of traffic and take up a lot of space on the site server. There is no need for that. Just inventory the data and then create an SMS query that outputs all add/remove programs data for all machines. Actually, you will have to turn on hardware inventory to get the add/remove programs data. Sounds strange but it's true.

You are not going to want to query on all *.exe's because that will include things like ping, cmd, etc.
