SMS 2003 and SQL

I have never used SMS before but we are running a trial of it on a trail Windows Server 2003. It found every user on our domain, but we did not want to test it incase there was en error an dhave that sent to every user. We connected it through a router with a laptop but it did not recognize it. We then Created its own Domain for this trial and SMS no longer worked. No Queries or Reports, not even the default ones. We deleted SMS after a couple of days and tried to burn a copy of SMS off our server (which is where the program is stored but that computer can no longer access it) and when we try to install it it goes all the way through but claims there is an error on the SQL database set up. Does anyone know what could be occuring here? Any help is appreciated!

What is the error? Is there an error #? Usually, SMS is used for file updates - You talk about moving queries and reports. Have you looked at DTS as an alternative as you have never used SMS before?

The Error that shows is this:
"Fatal Error
System Management Server Setup cannot continue because of the
following error:
Setup has encountered fatal errors during database initialization.
Contact your SQL administrator"

We changed around some of the configurations and received this
message:
"System Management Server Setup Wizard
Setup cannot complete the specified SMS installation on this computer
for the following reasons:
Cannot connect to SQL Server SERVERNAME using the specified SQL login
ID <sa> and password. You must make sure the SQL login ID and
passwords are valid"

We had all the queries when we first installed it, but then the system no longer found clients on it, so we uninstalled and reinstalled and since then it has not worked at all, not one thing. Any advice appreciated! thanks
