Hi,
We have a SMS 2.0 server on a NT 4.0 box. The SP4 is currently running and I'm thinking of upgrading to SP5.
Anybody got any helpful tips or things I should think about before the upgrade.
All thoughts are appreciated.

Regards,

SP5 is a good service pack to install. In general, you can do this fairly easily.

If you have a huge enviornment, you will have to do a little more planning. Always start with your SMS SP installation with your top most SMS site.

Here are some things I reccomend:

- Create a full backup of your SMS site (If you can do a full flat SMS backup by turning off SMS and SQL and then do the backup)

- Backup the SMS_DEF.MOF file as this can get overwritten by the service pack upgrade

- Think about timing and bandwidth: Once you update the SMS primary site, your clients will automatically start upgrading. Therefore, you may want to plan to do this update OFF HOURS.

- Perform a defrag of your SMS site server hard drives. This may have to be done multiple times with reboots in between. (The reason for this is because open locked files will not get defragged)

- Verify the health of your SMS site, in general, by checking event logs.

- Check for free disk space on your SMS site server hard drive

- Perform the SMS SP5 upgrade on your SMS top most Site server first...then upgrade your next tier, and so on.

- You must then upgrade the service pack on all of your SMS Administrator Consoles (An SMS site should be administered using an equal or higher version of the service pack.)

Its a pretty straight forward process, I wouldn't worry too much about performing this service pack. You should be fine...

-hope this helps..

Make sure if you have dsclient on your NT4.0 central site server you remove it before you install sp5. I will/can cause major connectivity problems with your admin consoles.

That was a 2 month pss event for me :)

only thing i would say is - if you have added any file rights to your directory structure inside the sms dir then remeber the sms service pack removes these.

apart from that the sp seems to go a treat
