Dell Power edge 6400 problems with Multiprocessors on OPEN SERVER 5.0.5.

I have the above system with Four Xeon Processors running Open server 5.0.5.

However, whenever I try to install the SCO Symmetrical Multiprocessing software for additional processors the system upon reboot it hangs!!!
On the Hardware inspection on reboot I get as far as: -

%Cd-rom

G hd_config.

The system just sits there and I have to do a COLD START use unix.old to remove the SCO Symmetrical Multiprocessing software and relink the kernel it boots correctly.
However, as the customer has purchased four processors and Licences he would like to use all of them.

I have tried installing the MP supplements as suggested in the DELL and SCO technical Articles.
In the following order:

INSTALL SCO 5.0.5 OS
INSTALL Symmetrical Multiprocessing
INSTALL Release Supp 505A
INSTALL SLS OSS497C.

But I still get the same problem each time.

I have experienced the same problem on other DELL SERVERS running XEON processors.

Has anyone got any ideas about the solution to the problem or have had the same experiences?

John

I Don't know if this will be much if any help to you. I have a Dell Poweredge 4400 with 2 PIII Xeon processors Running SCO UNIX 5.0.5 & SMP.

It's been a while since I did my install...so I don't remember much. I didn't have any problems at all when I did mine. The Patches that I have installed are listed below. You probably already know this, but it is important which order you install some of the patches.

************************************************************
SCO Symmetrical Multiprocessing (ver 1.1.1Eb)
UDK Compatibility Module for OpenServer 5.0.5 (ver 5.0.5A)
E820 Memory Sizing Boot Patch (ver oss610a.Unix505.1.0a)
OSS471E: Pentium family microcode supplement (ver oss471e)
OSS497C: Core OS Supplement (ver oss497c)
RS505A: Release Supplement for SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.5 (ver rs505a)
Year 2000 Supplement for RS505A (ver oss600a)

Hi,

Go to ftp://ftp.caldera.com/pub/openserver5/ and you will find a README file with all the patches requiered for 5.0.5.

There is a little mistake with the order that Zoonkai gave you before.

Install first the SMTP software and then apply the patches.

A few years ago i had the same problem but with a Netfinity 5000 box and SMTP, on that time i had to remove the PCI 3COM cards before installing the SMTP software.

I hope this can help

Thanks for the advice.

We have now decided to go to 5.0.6 which does work.

John
