any thoughts on what i need to do / cable i need - i am putting a call accounting program on a pc to be connected to a legend via the smdr port - i know it goes out of that rj45 but what are my options to convert to rs 232 to go to pc? also any distance issues to be concerned about - thanks !

You need the 355AF connector that can be ordered through any of Avaya's vendors (or through Avaya Direct at This connector will convert the RJ45 cable to a RS232 connection. If you don't want to buy the connector another post a few pages deep on this board lists the pinouts so you can make your own converter from scratch.

From my (way, way) past experience running serial connections across distances I think the lower the transfer rate the longer the connection can go. And since the Merlin connects at 2400 baud it should go a decent distance without needing a short-haul modem or some other repeating device. How far are you looking to go?
