I used to use smbmount to backup windows xp pcs on a linux server. I just went to setup this senario on a RedHat 5 and found that smbmount is not available anymore. Can anyone share if there is an alternative?

You probably just need to add the software, smbmount can be enabled on all linux systems. What distro?

I notice smbmount (or mount.smbfs) has been replaced by mount.cifs in recent kernel releases... perhaps Red Hat were very proactive with this update?

Annihilannic.

I keep reading that CIFS is faster and should be used for those types of mounts. So you might want to heed the words of Annihilannic.

It sounds like you just need to install it from the RPM repository.
