Hi,

We have the above UPS, the battery light is on, we have a replacement battery, but was just wondering if this model is hot swappable? it's just this UPS is connected to all our switches and routers etc... although I can arrange to do this out of hours, would be better to do this during the day.

Thanks,
Mick.

Hello Mick,

The battery is hot swappable. However, given the age of the UPS, which I can tell by the product number, you may want to do it after hours just to be on the safe side. Should it go down? No. I used to work at APC, and I have had it happen to customers on the phone, esp with older units.

Thanks for your reply, got some downtime arranged for tonight, I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't go down.

Regards,
Mick.

Hi,

The Smart UPS 1400 should be hot swappable, but it's always recommended to have a service window in case anything happens.

Overall, the Smart UPS 1400's are great UPSs, they're notoriously reliable and dependable. They have a great long useful life. Enjoy it to the Max.

Hi Tony,

When you say they are hot swappable, do you mean you can just unplug the battery and reconnect a new one without having to shut the UPS down? and in theory all connected devices 'should' keep running with no interuptions ( providing there is no interuption to the mains suppy)?

Or do you need to do something in the software to enable this feature?

Just wanted to clarify for next time.

Mick.

The battery is not part of the circuit with these UPS'. These are what is called a line interactive UPS, they trickle charge the battery but it does not effect the UPS when swapping the battery.

Plan a service window because it CAN go down. It shouldn't, but it does happen.

APC tends to overcharge the batteries so watch bulging batteries. If you cannot remove the batteries due to bulging you need to drill out and replace the rivets.

Good Luck

Hi Mick,

You can definitely switch the battery on the fly, without having to shut down the unit. Pull out the old RBC7 and replace it with a new one. Don't take too long doing it and you won't run into problems.

Hopefully you don't have a situation where you have bloated batteries like someone described above. That's definitely a problem that you can't fix on the fly.
