Is Lotus Smartsuite 9.8 really a viable programme to use to run a small business? Anyone run a small business using it? What are benefits? What are problems?

I don't know what you mean when you say "run" a small business.

In my opinion the benefit would be the cost. You can buy SmartSuite inexpensively on eBay.

The biggest issue would be communication with other people and other programs.

For example, my company's accounting program interfaces with Microsoft Office not SmartSuite. Our accountants send and ask for data in Excel spreadsheets.

If I am doing something for my own use, I prefer to use the Lotus spreadsheet because I am more familiar with it, because of familiarity the data entry and organization go more quickly, and the printing setup is easier.

As far as the packages beyond the spreadsheet, I dont have any experience or comments.

Another issue to consider would be training - I think you can find people that know the Lotus suite but it would be much easier to find people trained on the Microsoft suite.

In regard to cost, there is an open source office suite that is supposed to do a good job reading and writing Office formats, you could also evaluate that.
