I'm implementing L2TP over IPSec VPN solution using Win2K's built-in features.
Can somebody explain me why smartcards are the most secure solution for user authentication ?
Isn't is true that, if you know the pincode of the smartcard, you can get access ?
Now if we are realistic, we all know that users do write down passwords & pincodes...
Is there something I don't know yet ?

Thanks

In my last company we had a keycode card with a small display which displayed a number that changed every minute or so. The thing was called securID-Tag.

I believe that this is quite secure.

This secureID card, is this a regular smartcard ?
Or does it simply calculate a pincode which you can use with a third party product...
I just want to use a smartcard, but no other 3rd party products

Thanks

I don't think they are true smartcards. They were used for VPN Authentication. I just wanted to give you an alternative Idea.
