I have an HP Pavillion that is out of warranty now and when I turn the machine on I get a message that says "SMART failure predicted...Press F2 to continue or Press F1 for setup" I have tried pressing F2 to continue, but it will not let me past that screen. I have gone into the BIOS and changed SMART reporting on that drive to disabled and still get that error. Do I need to replace the Hard Drive or is there another test?

Thanks,
Michael

Ideally if you have valuable data on it, try to slave it on another system and you may possibly be able to retreive the files before total failure.
All the major HDD manufactures have there own diagnostic utilities that can in some circumstances bring the hard drive back to life, so it is worth downloading these tools and carrying out some tests before you right the drive off completely.
Obviously you may need to replace the drive if this doesn't work.

Sorry, forgot to mention they are all free from whichever hard drive manufacturer you have.

Go into bios setup and find the "stop on errors" section and disable the "stop on hard drive errors". This will allow you to use the computer normally. Back-up anything you need immediately!! The last one I had like this went 2 more days before total death.
