A friend brought me an Hp pavillion 8240, i did a couple upgrades, one was memory and 2 was the HD, Western Digital 40gig 7200. I installed XP on it and kept her old HD as a slave. The next day she says that it gave her this error "SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0:" Press F1 to continue. It starts up just fine and works great, so I decieded to disconnect the slave and just run the master, when I do that the new error message is " Operating System not found". I plug the slave back in and we're back to the original error. So, after this long message the question is " WHAT THE @#$% IS WRONG WITH THIS THING?" All input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What happens if you disable S.M.A.R.T in the bios?

Actually i hadn't tried that, i'm trying to now and can't figure out where to change it, it has a PhoenixBIOS.

you definitely will find reference to the "s.m.a.r.t" feature in the bios, no matter what bios. Just keep looking it will be there.

S.M.A.R.T enabled

On the other hand, disabling this doesnt matter as it is telling you the hard drive is on the way out.
As for the 'operating system not found", is it possible, just possible, that while you were in the bios, that you changed the boot sequence to start with the floppy drive or something other than the hard drive, if so that will give you that error message. Check the boot sequence?
