Wow, I can't say that I've ever seen that happen...and I use SmartList a LOT! Do you have the GP 9.0 instance service packed? Can you reproduce this or was it just a one time thing?
Usually you see wacky stuff like the wrong number of results returned, when you've lost and regained connection to the SQL Server. GP doesn't have anything built in to notify you that this happened and might cause a problem, but it usually doesn't recover from a lost connection as gracefully as some other applications...
If you keep seeing this king of stuff regularly (not necessarily this exact scenario, but similar issues) then you should take a look at your network and connectivity to the SQL Server a little closer. Otherwise, take screen shots and keep them in case you need them down the road.
