Hi guys,

I am working with a file that i have to send all the time through FTP for corrections. It is useful to have the images for reference, but since many cannot find the link, as you can see in the picture

i thought the size of the file should be somehow smaller.

The question is:

How can i Save As and make it a smaller file but including images? I just need images in low res. Can be done this in a fast way, without having to reduce each image file size?

Maybe ID have a smaller file size as Saving PDF (Low res-Printing, etc)

Thanks for any info!

Cheers,
Sebastian

Hi Eugene,

They just edit text, but need the images as reference.

Actually, i did sent them the image with the same name but in Low-Res (500 Kb to 1 Mb Max). The original images are in High Res and around 10 to 20 Mb each one. To save time and avoid errors I just work with the High Res without changing its names, the original images and keep at my folder computer.

Anyhow, every time i send the Indesign file the size will be around 10 to 30 Mb, which is just TEXT because the High Res images are just attached (not embedded).

So is there any way to reduce size to an Indesign File?

Cheers,
Sebastian

I mean you're going by FTP here, is it really a problem that it's 10 mb? The idea of FTP is that it's for things too big to email, so anything over 5mb for example.

In InDesign go to

Preferences>File Handling

Saving InDesign Files

Uncheck the box.

Turn off Enable Version Cue

Then if it's still not small enough do a

File>Export and choose in format

.inx

That is an InDesign intechange file, compatible to be opened cross platform and cross versions.

It should be a smaller file.

When opened it opens as Untitled.indd so you will need to do a save as.

This should reduce your file sizes.

Thanks for the good info Eugene!

I will try both methods. By the way, what Version Cue does? is it the same if it turns off or on for most commons works?

Regarding FTP, sometimes i do send info to places outside Europe or the US where speed is not as fast, that is why concerns on size and speed.

Cheers,
Sebastian

Well the other way you could reduce size is to reduce your images to 1 bit b/w and send them a copy, they'd be viewable in indesign but wouldn't print very well.

Don't worry about Version Cue, it's just best to have it off if you're not using it. And you obviously aren't.

Hi Eugene,

I will try with reducing smaller image. No problem with a small size image, other people need to have an idea. They do not print. I always have the Hi Res images with the same name for the relink in my computer.

I was just curious why when having all images linked not embedded an InDesign file could still be the size 15 Mb.

Thanks for the tip!

Sebastian

It depends on the size of the book. InDesign generates a low-res thumbnail image to place as a proxy for viewing the layout. The thumbnail is part of the indesign file. If you've got a heavy imaged document with 100's of pages then it could build up a large indesign file.

Thanks for the info Eugene. That is probably the reason, even if the images are 72 dpi, there are a whole bunch of them.

Cheers,
Sebastian
