I have been managing a small apache webserver on Win2k for some time now, using a single IP and virtual host stuff.
I have also started a free web-hosting service which is likely to use a lot of server resources and space, so i figured it would be wise to run this on a separate server, on the same IP. How can I configure apache, my dns or a thirdparty tool to redirect server requests to my *.freehost domain to another server on my network? my other option would be to run the other server as a fileserver for my free webhosting, in which case am i able to configure my virtual-hosts in a file other than httpd.conf, eg vhost.conf or something?
Thanks,
-Seamus

Hi,

"separate server, on the same IP. How can I configure apache, my dns or a thirdparty tool to redirect server requests to my *.freehost domain to another server on my network?"

If you are able to change you dns records.
Maybe try:
*.freehost.tld IN A x.x.x.x
or
*.freehost.tld IN CNAME freehost.tld.

Are you using subdomains for your free hosting?

ah, all that stuff is no big worry really, i have it all sorted, i origianlly thought that on my dns I could put an address and a port ie 210.55.34.56:81 so that on my router i could make port 81 go to my free server, but that is basically making dns a router too, a no-go. so i think i need some sort of apache/http - proxy thing to redirect requests to different servers based on domain.

Any ideas?
