Small Office - DSL or Cable

Has anyone setup a Small Office system connected to DSL or Cable via the Ethernet WAN interface? Can you connect the SMO unit directly to a Cable Modem? Any help would be appreciated.

I have been trying this setup It can work but may cause problems depending on the following

1) do you have a fixed or dynamic IP address
2) what version of software are you using.

If you are using 2.0 then dynamic adressing will cause major problems, You will need to manualy add an IPO route to the ISP Gateway. The IPO will not renew its IP address when the lease expires, rebooting the IPO will not obtain a new IP Addr (remove the details form Lan 2 befroe rebooting)

2.1 (on trial) Software has improved this situation.
the IPO will now obtain the Gateway & DNS server information create the necessary dynamic IP route.
The IPO will not renew its lease but a sinple reboot is now all that is required.

I have been in direct contact with the Avaya developers regarding this & they seem keen to resolve this 1 final issue.

cussrently the only practical workaround is to conect a cheap (£35.00 or less) Cable/ADSL router between the IPO & the cable modem although this does seem to defeat the whole point.

If anyone else is having this problem I sugest you get you reseller to escalate it to Avaya this should encorage them to continue working on the problem

I have found downunder that the WAN interface is useless, as all of our ISP's require PPPoE for Adsl, or for cable a BPA login script which the IPO does not support.

It seems to be only designed for corporate xDSL services such as G.SHDSL or Bridged Ethernet configurations. Not standard Adsl or cable connections.

In my eyes it is a Very week so called design enhancment.

If using DSL check out the Netcomm NB1300 Modem/Router. We have found this to be a very versatile device, that looks perfect for this type of application.

Haven't connected it ourselves with an IP Office, but I would be confident it would do the trick - it manages the PPPoE (which appears to be the emerging preference for ADSL authentication), and it combines the modem and router in one device, keeping things neat.
And its relatively cheap!
